I’m going to outline my top tips for you to monetize your blog.
And they work, you just need to be willing to put the effort in.

This post may contain affiliate links. If you click through and make a purchase, I may receive payment at no cost to you.
Quick Table of Contents
Ways to Start a Blog and Make Money
#1 Affiliate Marketing
This is at number 1 because it literally is the most common way to make money on your blog.
As a general overview, you sign up to Affiliate Programs like CJ Affiliate, Offervault etc. You can check out my review on Affiliate Programs here.
All you need to do is find affiliate links within your niche and promote them. When someone uses your link you earn a commission.
These commissions can vary depending on the product but they can range from a few dollars up to the $100’s.
Of course, you can’t just throw links all over your site hoping that someone will click and purchase. It doesn’t work that way.
The golden rule is that someone comes to our sites because they have a question, a need, they want information. We should first and foremost me offering great content that helps them.
When someone trusts you they are more likely to purchase from you right?
Put it this way
Neil Patel puts it a great way: If we just met and I asked you to marry me what would you say? NO
If we dated for a year or so and you trusted me and believed in me and I asked you to marry me what would you say? More chance of a YES, right?
This is no different to what we are talking about here. There needs to be a level of trust and respect for someone to purchase.
The other Affiliate Programs you should consider are the ones you maybe used to set up your website to get started. For Instance, I use the following and they offer Affiliate Programs (these are also affiliate links for me)
Bluehost – Web Hosting and Domains
Wealthy Affiliate – The best training in the world for starting a blog and making money.
You get the point here right? I am offering content with information and solutions and within that content I am using my affiliate links. Not just because I want to push you to click on them (well a little maybe), but because they are services that I know and love and would recommend to someone because I know they are great.
Please also do your research with some Affiliate Programs as some aren’t as good as others and you don’t want to be selling or promoting poor material or services.
#2 Sell Your Own Courses
Yes you can create a course and sell it on your blog. You can create a course on literally anything that you think will benefit your audience, make them better, teach them something, make them more money.
A course will provide massive value to someone and it will all be in one package.
Nobody needs to be a complete expert in the subject, but you need to be great at the way you teach and it needs to add great value.
If you can find a shortcut to something that people have been looking for, or you have a solution to a problem why not expand on that?
We are already blogging about it, so put some more detail into it and create a course with value.
You can use a resource like Teachable to help you with this (this isn’t an affiliate link by the way).
#3 Sell Ebooks to Make Money
Similar to the courses in a way. We already blog, so I assume that you enjoy writing content!
It’s not that difficult a task to expand on what you are already talking about in a post.
I have a post on Trigger Words to find Low Competition Niches. If I put my mind to it, I could quite easily expand on this and create an e book on ‘How to Find Ultra Low Competitive Niches’ or something like that. It’s in my plans!!
The other good thing about the Ebooks is, unlike doing a course, you don’t need to be in front of the camera if that’s not your thing.
#4 Sell Physical Products
There is a huge opportunity to sell physical products.
It would be quite easy to set up a store through Etsy or Shopify and link them to your blog.
You can then drive traffic from your blog to your store.
This goes back to what I said earlier, give the customer value and then point them in the right direction of what you are promoting.
As a side note, I would avoid setting up a Shopify store and do what everyone else does (especially the Guru’s who spout garbage), and don’t try to sell through Facebook ads. Unless you have an amazing niche and a very targeted audience then you will lose out and that will happen quickly.
If you read my post on Finding Low Competitve Niche’s you will notice I found one Niche that revolved around Wood Carving and one for Cheap Plus Size Clothing.
Both of these would work great as a blog and a store. Both have companies with affiliate programs to sell their items and you can also drop ship if that works for you.
Dropshipping is where you promote a physical item on your store at a marked up price. A customer purchases from your store. You purchase from a third party at a lower price and they ship to your customer. You keep the profit.
Be aware of who you use – some products are not good quality and can lead to lots of refunds and complaints (China especially).
#5 Ads to Make Money
Ads are a passive way of earning an income.
Ad revenue depends on traffic to your blog on a daily, weekly and Monthly basis.
For example, you sign up with Google Adsense they place ads on your site. Your revenue depends on the amount of people on your blog that click these ads.
They are great for generating a bit of money but the downside is that the ads can become annoying to the reader.
I have been on sites, as I’m sure you have, that have so many ads I just get fed up and leave.
You probably noticed, I don’t have ads because I decided that I wanted visitors to my site to concentrate on the content and not the ads.
#6 Sell Your Website
That’s right you can sell your blog to make money.
Depending on the following:
- How much money your blog makes each month
- Your Monthly Traffic
- Domain Authority
- etc. etc.
You can sell for $1,000’s but it needs to be a good website.
There are some people who don’t want the hassle of setting up a blog from scratch so they purchase an already money making website.
Others want to start from scratch. Personally, I wouldn’t want to buy a website for a number of reasons.
- I probably couldn’t afford too
- I like the thought of building something I can call my own
- I probably wouldn’t write the same as the previous owner so where’s the content consistency.
#7 Create an Email List to make Money
Anyone will tell you, the sale generally isn’t made on the first visit. This is true for online stores, blogs etc.
The money is in the follow up. What do I mean by that?
Remember what I said earlier in the post? relationship is the easiest way to establish trust with blog readers and sell a product.
This relationship begins when the reader first visits your website or blog. Then they will generally leave.
The idea of the email list is to offer further value to your subscriber. Remember, the greater the value and the trust the more likely they will purchase from you.
You want to be converting your visitors into your customers and this can take time. Throughout the emails you can still offer what we have spoken about above – ebooks, courses, affiliate links etc.
Just remember though, you are primarily offering value.
Mailchimp is a good option for email subscribers – and you get the first 2,000 on a free account.
#8 Paid Reviews
Yes, there are companies out there that will send you their products for you to review and pay you for it.
Of course, you need to be generating a good amount of traffic and it needs to be relevant to your niche.
Some other businesses will sponsor a specific post in exchange for a link back to their site from your readers.
#9 Blog Freelancing to Make Money
There are tons of people who need help with their blogs and want to pay people to write posts for them.
You don’t need amazing freelancing skills in order to make some money! You just need to find 1 or 2 skills you enjoy working hard at and learning about.
To offer your freelancing services you can simply add a services page to your blog telling your audience what you do, what your credentials are (yes this can be that you run your own blog) and start promoting.
So there you have my tips on making money with your blog.
I would personally start with the Affiliate Links and maybe the E book if you feel confident to write one with good value.
If you want to learn everything about setting up your online business have a look at Wealthy Affiliate – it’s free and you can build 2 websites with no credit card required:
